Remote-controlled bolt drilling in the Renström mine.
In the spring of 2020, Bergteamet used remote-controlled bolt drilling during the work to reinforce several new shafts for Boliden in the Renström mine. A total of 4,000 bolt holes were drilled with the robot.
Bergteamet’s effort consisted of reinforcing five new shafts: three tip shafts for ore and waste rock and two ventilation shafts. The shafts were raise bored by Masterdrilling Europe AB and then reinforced by Bergteamet.
“We first sprayed the three tip shafts with concrete using the Concrete Lining Robot and then used the new remote-controlled bolt drilling platform. A total of 4,000 holes were drilled, and each hole was bolted with a 1.8-meter-long bulbous wire bolt. The two ventilation shafts were only sprayed with concrete,” says Magnus Bergkvist.
Remote Control is the Future
Each shaft was about 100 meters and three meters in diameter.
“One challenge was the slope of one of the shafts, so we had to adapt the equipment when it was time for it, but there were no major difficulties. Everything went well, and remote-controlled work in shafts will become increasingly common; it is the future. The technology and working method are here to stay,” says Magnus.
The work in Renströmsgruvan started in December 2019 and was completed in June 2020.
