Accurate blasting operation for the new bus terminal in Katarinaberget

In the rebuilding of the Slussen area in Stockholm, the new bus terminal in Katarinaberget with many entrances and connections is an important part of the solution. Since 2020, Bergteamet has been a subcontractor to Implenia in part of the work to create the underground cavity for the large terminal.

The bus terminal is located completely under the ground and will accommodate both passengers and bus traffic. In addition, the terminal connects to the Saltsjö line and the existing metro. The terminal is extensive and consists of several underground cavities with spans of up to 24 meters and up to 30 meters in height.

The work of building the terminal has taken place from two directions. Bergteamet’s area started in Katarinagaraget by Slussen’s traditional OK gas station, while Implenia’s team worked from the other direction, from Stadsgårdskajen.

The assignment was extended

Bergteamet’s mission began in the spring of 2020.

– During the project, we saw that our own resources needed to be strengthened and then we chose to collaborate with Bergteamet.

Initially, the idea was that Bergteamet’s efforts would only be for a few months and mainly include stoping, but over time the collaboration was expanded, says Erik Tjäder, Implenia’s production manager at Slussen.

Developed a new solution

The expanded collaboration was based, among other things, on the detailed planning for part of the progress. Implenia and Bergteamet developed a different method than the one originally planned.

-Initial, the plan was to work with surface drill rigs and then blast from ground level, but together with Bergteamet, instead we chose to go with tunnel rigs and blast upwards from underground level. It turned out to be a method that gave a much better result and was positive for the time schedule, says Erik Tjäder.
